Ron Gilson is the gardener's assistant, who runs errands for the girls at Malory Towers and people around the village. Ron and Gwen did have a sort of bumpy relationship before Gwen started sending letters to Teddy (a.k.a Ron) and Ron is the one replying to Gwen. Mary - Lou pitches in to help with the situation when Ron refuses to write back. In the end, Gwendoline is mad at the both of them for doing this to her and goes off crying on a bench. Ron comes along and gives her a handkerchief, puts his arm around her, then after a quit talk they kiss. Gwendoline jumps back in shock and spots Mary - Lou looking at them and so runs away in embarrassment.

Ron and Gwen have a strange relationship. Ron helps Gwendoline in Series 1 by finding her a spider, and takes her mother's broach to the antique shop in Series 2, but is always quite mocking, especially, about her "ladylike airs" and her squeamishness around creatures, and laughs when she lands in the manure. Later on in the series, Ron and Gwendoline kiss, spotted by Mary-Lou. Their relationship is quite close after that treasuring moment. He loves Gwen.
